* Chinese tech company Huawei has today unveiled two new smartphones – Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro – in Munich, Germany
* The two devices are the first to come with chips with AI capabilities. The Kirin 970 chip allows the phones to perform AI and deep-learning related tasks without relying on AI in the cloud.
* The phones also features the world’s largest camera aperture.
* The Mate 10 will cost €699 (N297,000) while the Mate 10 Pro will cost (N339,000)
After months of anticipation, rumours and leaks, Huawei has finally unveiled its Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro today.
Both devices feature an almost bezel-less display, and the most obvious difference between them lies in the screen size and shape. The display on the Mate 10 is a 5.9-inch 2560×1440 LCD while the Mate 10 Pro sports a 6-inch 2160 × 1080 OLED display. With an aspect ratio of 18:9, the Mate 10 Pro feels smaller in the hand, while the regular Mate 10 has a 16:9 aspect ratio which should be good for watching YouTube videos.
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group couldn’t resist the temptation to compare the Mate 10 to Apple’s iPhone at the launch event which took place in Munich. He said: “The new iPhone is amazing and has a screen-to-body ratio of 81 per cent. But Huawei Mate 10 goes even further than that, and has a ratio of 81.79 per cent.”

The Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro come with Leica dual camera with the world’s largest aperture (f/1.6) and optical image stabilisation (OIS). One of the lenses is a 12MP RGB sensor while the other is a 20MP monochrome sensor.

The two devices are rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, and they both come with 4000mAh battery supported by super-fast charging. Just 30 minutes of charging will provide up to 58 per cent battery power – that is 50 percent faster charging than the iPhone 8.
Behind the performance of the both devices lies the world’s first mobile AI processing chip, called Neural Processing Unit (NPU). The Kirin 970 is Huawei’s in-house developed chip that has AI capabilities built into it. It can handle AI and deep-learning related tasks such as image recognition without relying on the AI in the cloud.

Also thanks to the Kirin 970 chip, the Mate 10 has up to 50 percent longer battery life. Mr Yu said: “The Kirin 970 chipset has 50 per cent better energy efficiency and 25 per cent better performance. The chip is 20 times faster than competition, including iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8.”
The devices will launch with Android 8.0, the regular Mate 10 comes with 64GB of storage plus 4GB RAM, and it is expected to go on sale from later in the month for €699 (N297,000). The Mate 10 Pro will come with 128GB storage, 6GB RAM and will sell for €799(N339,000) from mid-November. A special Porsche design version of the Mate 10 will be available also from mid-November, and it will cost €1395(N592,000) for 256GB storage and 6GB RAM.
