Google launches ‘Chat’ messaging service

Just added to the already long list of IM services is Google’s Chat, and it comes with already popular features like group messages, ability to attach and share videos. It also lets you know when someone is typing or if your messages have been read.

Chat is designed to replace SMS, therefore it will run via Android Messages app, which comes pre-installed on many Android devices. So if you already have the app, it’s just a case of updating it to get the full features Chat has to offer. It is also available on Google Play, in case you don’t have it factory-installed on your phone.

The format for the new messaging service is based on rich communication services (RCS) platform, and if mobile operators implement it properly, encryption could be made available.
